There's one figure that stands out from the others during Christmas time: Santa! Every child around the world knows Santa Claus from the North Pole. A tradition many families have is a yearly visit to see Santa and to tell him what you would like for Christmas. Some kids get very excited about seeing Santa - but others are nearly terrified. While parents may find a nervous kid adorable, there are things you can do to make your kid's Santa experience easier and stress free.
Begin the Christmas season by sharing a storybook featuring Santa Claus. Another option is to watch a kids' video featuring Santa Claus. Either choice will introduce or remind your kids to the jolly old guy in red. This can help warm them to the idea of speaking with Santa. Take this time to talk to them about their Santa visit coming up. Let them ask questions about visiting Santa.
Some adults may find it a little funny that kids can be nervous or even scared of Santa but it makes a lot of sense: we do after all teach our kids to be afraid of strangers and to stay away from them. Santa is not a friend or family member and certainly could be considered a stranger. Kids could be reminded that Santa is someone friendly and exactly what will happen on their visit to Santa. That Mommy or Daddy will be with them the entire time.
Make the visit to Santa low stress and try to go early in the season when the traffic is lower at Santa's Little Workshop or booth. Later in the season, the lines will be long and the stress level will be higher. Going earlier in the day may also make your Santa visit easier, or even on a weekday instead of on the weekend.
Even if your kid seems nervous or shy, encourage them for participating in their visit with Santa. That encouragement will inspire them to be more confident for next year's visit.
